Assistant Coach Scott Ward

Scott is a USAT and USATF level 1 certified coach with a BS from the University of Rhode Island and an MS from the University of Connecticut. Both of Scott’s degrees are in environmental studies, and this background in science has given him the necessary skill set to critically decipher research and determine which coaching approaches are evidence-based. He began coaching triathletes in 2010 and has successfully coached his adult athletes to PRs at all triathlon distances, including the Ironman 70.3 World Championships and the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. Scott enjoys working one-on-one with his athletes, through open water swims, group rides, and runs. He uses his scientific research background to build training plans for his athletes using sound, evidence-based training principles. He understands that coaching athletes to help them reach their goals requires a commitment to developing a training schedule that optimizes their training time and that is based on evidence of continued fitness growth. Scott’s coaching philosophy continues to evolve along with the science of training.

Scott began his triathlon career in 2004 at the Brigantine Sprint triathlon and was immediately hooked on the sport of triathlon. He has competed in sprint distance, olympic distance, half ironman and ironman distance events. Scott competed in Ironman Brazil 2007, his first ironman race, finishing 30th in his age group with a PR of 10:16:05. Scott set his PR of 4:39:33 at the half-ironman distance in the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida. His focus for the 2014 season will be returning to local sprint triathlons in New Jersey and racing fast. Scott currently works as a high school biology teacher, where he is also the boys’ and girls’ head varsity cross country and track coach. These teams have enjoyed immense success in Scott’s first 5 varsity seasons, including individual state champions in both track and cross country. Scott enjoys working with his young athletes and introducing them to the science of running.
